The Army and Soccer - Singaporean Guys
A common topic on local guy's talk. In many social settings or networking sessions where guys get to know one another, the first few topics will most definitely consist of "Which camp are you from?" or "Hey, did you watch the soccer match last night?" And when it is my turn, I go
"Eh, I did not go to the Army for my National Service. I was in Blue, serving for the Singapore Police Force as my national service commitment" Then silence. "So you know this XXXXX? The match was awesome." "Eh, I don't watch soccer." Again, silence. It is really strange. Nine out of ten times when I get to know someone local that is around my age. This two topics are the "hot topics" for the night. Once, I attended a dinner function for a professional society and the two guys beside me were chatting non stop about army and their experiences. I really seemed to be missing out quite a long. Gatherings with my college mates will end up in discussions about soccer or how their reservist in Army went. I will be just sitting down there and nodding to their remarks. To be honest, before I started working, I could not even be bothered to understand the terms used in the Army. Now, it seemed to be an important aspect in networking. Well, at least you will not seem alien to the army guys when they started talking. It somehow became a need to know simple things happening in the army life so that I could use that to bridge it over to more "business" talk out of networking sessions. Soccer on the other hand seemed too dynamic for me to follow up. I was never a big fan of sports, especially those involving bigger balls such as soccer, basketball, etc. The changes in the soccer team players, movement from team to team, league tables are big news, news that I deemed a waste of my time. From young, I am always interested in technology. When my peers read soccernet, I will be reading other techy websites. They flip to the last few pages of The New Paper while I am usually interested in other gossip news. I have never read the sports pages before with the rare exception for Olympics or other major sporting events. The purpose is to be kept just minimally updated so that I have topics to talk to colleagues or clients and then use it to come back to business.
